Traditional Welsh Flannel
Flannel being traced back to a Welsh origin has changed and developed over many years to incorporate many materials, styles and different uses. Here at Melin Teifi we promote and use the traditional methods of weaving this beautiful traditional welsh flannel. We also encourage and promote some of the traditional fashions of days gone by that are both unique and elegant. Smocks are amazing garments that can be graceful and practical, and our Welsh wool flannel material is brilliant for all shirt and smock designs.
Welsh Wool Flannels were originally created using carded wool. Carding wool is the method of disentangling fibres and eliminating locks and clumps in the fibre in order to create a continuous flow of fibres ready for spinning and then weaving. This material, once weaved is then sometimes brushed to release some of those fibres to create a softer touch to the material.
Welsh Wool Flannel therefore has a very natural feel to it and brings out the true beauty of traditional sheep shearing and the art of harvesting wools. As such, we highly recommend a visit to our premises in order for you to gain a real appreciation of our traditional Welsh Flannel. Felindre village, home to the Teifi valley and home to the Museum of the Welsh Woollen Industry is rich in the heritage and history of these traditional methods and these beautifully woven fabrics and fashions. Our shop and mill is situated within the museum premises and therefore a very informative part of the story of wool production and how Welsh wool flannel still is a very versatile and wonderful fabric to use.
